Tasting notes

Our Malbec, a vibrant expression of the Chalk Hill terroir, is characteristically fruit-forward and full-bodied. Its intense bouquet captivates with alluring notes of cedar box, delicate violets, and supple leather. On the palate, a mellow symphony of flavors unfolds, guided by supple tannins that glide seamlessly from front to back. Ripe cherry, decadent chocolate, and nuanced floral hints of geranium and morning glory dance harmoniously, dominating the flavor profile. The finish, a hallmark of Malbec, reveals a captivating interplay of toasty oak, fresh berries, and delicate spice.

With a harmonious 14.7% alcohol by volume, this wine achieves a remarkable balance, allowing its vibrant aromas to fully express themselves. While enjoyable now, this Malbec promises a graceful evolution through 2022. For an optimal experience, we recommend decanting for 30 minutes before serving.

Windsor Oaks, nestled within the prestigious Chalk Hill AVA, enjoys a unique terroir that sets it apart. Chalk Hill, established in 1988, occupies the northeast corner of the renowned Russian River Valley AVA. This distinctive appellation takes its name from the striking, volcanically-derived soils – a chalky white ash that nurtures exceptional thick-skinned red grape varietals. Elevated above much of the Russian River Valley, Windsor Oaks benefits from slightly warmer temperatures and refreshing afternoon breezes, creating an ideal environment for cultivating world-class grapes.

Imagine a winemaker forged in the heart of Yosemite, his spirit honed on the slopes of Squaw Valley. That's Russ Jones. From a childhood spent exploring Yosemite's wilderness, to high school ski races where he reigned supreme (and met his future wife!), Russ's life has been a thrilling adventure.

A UC Davis graduate with a deep understanding of winemaking, Russ and his wife journeyed through the Pacific Northwest and California's Central Coast, refining their Pinot Noir expertise. But something was missing. The crisp mountain air, the pure, untamed energy of Tahoe.

Returning to Truckee, Russ dared to dream: creating wines that reflected the unique terroir of his beloved mountains. Leveraging Tahoe's naturally perfect temperatures and humidity, he crafted a winery unlike any other. Truckee River Winery is where Russ's artistic vision and scientific precision collide. The result? Wines that capture the very soul of Tahoe, bursting with unmatched flavors and aromas.
